Overview

De aprendizaje precoz y carácter inquieto, estudió danza, música, pintura y literatura, especialmente a partir de la publicación de los relatos de sus viajes. Quedó fascinada por Egipto en su único viaje a este país, en 1873, dedicándose desde este momento plenamente a la egiptología. De regreso a Inglaterra, fundó el Egypt Exploration Fund- que sigue existiendo en la actualidad con el nombre de Egypt Exploration Society- para el patrocinio de estudios y excavaciones en Egipto, contando con colaboradores como Flinders Petrie o Howard Carter, entre otros.
En 1877 publicó esta obra, Mil Millas Nilo Arriba, con gran éxito, de la que se hizo una nueva edición en 1891. Antes de su muerte, creó la primera cátedra de egiptología del Reino Unido en el University College de Londres.
